Image
Credit: Huw Fairclough Port Talbot's Joshua John is set to finally challenge for the coveted Lord Lonsdale belt in an intriguing domestic bout this summer.  The 31-year-old secured his opportunity at challenging for the British Bantamweight title back in June when he defeated Yorkshire's Logan Richardson over 10-rounds at The Galleries in Bristol.  John finds himself on an impressive run of form after he suffered the second defeat of his career to Liverpool's Brad Strand in their WBO European Super-Bantamweight title clash in December of 2023.  The Port-Talbot native is unbeaten in his last four bouts and will be looking to make it five in a row when he returns to the ring this summer.  As revealed by the British Boxing Board of Control , John will challenge Essex's Harvey Smith for the vacant British Bantamweight crown at Cardiff's Vale Sports Arena on Saturday July 4, in an event that will be promoted by Sanigar Events.  Smith, who has suffered just one defeat...

Joe Calzaghe Gives Surprising Answer When Naming Greatest Ever Opponent

Image
Welsh great Joe Calzaghe faced the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr during his decorated career, but believes one man tops both as his greatest ever opponent.  Calzaghe is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest British fighter to have ever graced the sport, with many ranking him just ahead of legendary heavyweight Lennox Lewis.  'The Pride of Wales' remains the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion of all time, having made 20 successful defences of his WBO title over a ten year period.  After cementing his legacy at 168lbs, Calzaghe eventually made the move up to light-heavyweight where he faced both Jones and Hopkins in the final two bouts of his career.  Whilst he had been linked with a domestic showdown with Carl Froch just after his win over Jones, Calzaghe opted to announce his retirement from the sport with an unblemished record of 46-0.  In an interview with The Ring Magazine , Calzaghe gave a shock answer when revealing...

Heavyweight Hopeful Moses Jolly Set To Make Long-Awaited Ring Return In May

Image
Credit: Ryan Hiscott After being hit with a number of setbacks over the last few months, Swansea heavyweight Moses Jolly can finally look forward to making a return to action.  The unbeaten 30-year-old, who has been victorious in each of his 11 professional contests, made just two ring appearances in 2025, with his last coming in July.  'The Native' stopped Colombia's John Cortez in the opening round of their showdown at the Ballroom at the Margaritaville Hotel in the Cayman Islands to capture the NBA Americas Heavyweight title, the first of his professional career.  Jolly was due to make his return to the ring in Bristol against the hard-hitting Boma Brown last month, but the fight fell through at the very last minute, leaving the Welshman extremely frustrated and without an opponent.  The Swansea star is now in line to be back in action during the summer however, after it was revealed that he would feature on a Black Flash Promotions card in May.  Jolly is set...

Newport's Nathan Howells Brings An End To Storied Professional Career

Image
Credit: Huw Fairclough After 15 professional contests, a Welsh title challenge, a Celtic title triumph and a number of memorable wins on the road, Nathan Howells has announced his retirement from boxing.  The 32-year-old entered the paid ranks back in October of 2021 and did what many fail to do at any point during their first 10 bouts - face an opponent with a winning record on their pro debut.  Howells' supporters rallied him along as he picked up a comprehensive points win over Mexico's Christian Lopez Flores at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff.  He remained unbeaten in his opening nine bouts but tasted defeat for the first time in his tenth when he was outpointed by Port Talbot's Conor McIntosh in his attempt at becoming the Welsh Area super-featherweight champion.  His resilience prevailed however as he made it two victories on the spin before he stepped up to challenge the late John Cooney for the Celtic super-featherweight title at the Ulster Hall in Be...

Rhys Edwards And Gully Powar Battle To Draw After Entertaining Clash In Cardiff

Image
Credit: Chris Dean/Boxxer   Rhys Edwards' opportunity at becoming the British Featherweight champion slipped through his fingers after his showdown with Gully Powar was declared a majority decision draw.  The popular Welsh star put on an impressive display against his English rival on Saturday night but ultimately fell short after an entertaining 12-rounds at the Utilita Arena.  Edwards was very sound defensively and was able to catch Powar with a number of stinging counter shots throughout the contest. Powar had his fair share of success however as he was able to force Edwards onto the ropes on a number of occasions, although many of the shots collided with the gloves and arms of the Welshman.  Two out of the three judges at ringside scored the bout 114-114, meaning neither fighter would be taking the coveted Lord Lonsdale Belt home with them.  It's no secret that both fighters will be keen on doing battle once more in what promises to be yet another thrilling ...
